Why these ants are different from a one-time scout
Odorous house ants do not live in a single nest like some other species. They build a main colony outside and smaller groups, called satellite colonies, inside wall voids, under floors, or near moisture. When you spray the ants you see, the colony may simply split and show up somewhere else. That is why a spray on the counter rarely solves the problem for long. They are attracted to sweets, grease, pet food, and sticky spills. In our mild climate they stay active longer than in colder regions, so indoor trails can run from late winter well into summer.
What you can do before a technician arrives
Keep food in sealed containers and wipe counters and tables daily. Fix leaky faucets and dry out damp areas under sinks. Trim plants that touch the siding so ants have fewer bridges into the house. These steps help, but they usually do not remove a colony that is already established inside the structure.

When to call instead of waiting
Call when trails return after cleaning, when you see ants in several rooms, or when baits from the store have not helped after a couple of weeks. The sooner the nest is addressed, the less likely satellite colonies spread through the house.
